If we are looking at the provision of free school meals as a measure to alleviate poverty, we must take into consideration what happens to those families during school holidays. We can confirm that many families suffer disproportionately during school holiday periods because of the withdrawal of that benefit.

The top-up swimming programme, which started in 2010, supports the improved delivery of swimming lessons to schoolchildren throughout Scotland. To date, £1.2 million has been invested in the programme, and I hope shortly to announce what additional support will be made available.
