Meeting of the Parliament 02 February 2012

However, the fact is that SNP back benchers should have signed up in support of the motion, because they should be joining the rest of us in trying to persuade the cabinet secretary to drop his ill-conceived proposals to abolish prison visiting committees. It has been maintained that prison visiting committees are being abolished so that they can be replaced by a Government-funded independent advocacy service, whether it is to be run by Sacro or A N...

This time last week, I hosted a reception in the Parliament, which Margaret Mitchell also attended, for people who are involved with contact centres, many of which are staffed by volunteers.I join Nanette Milne in congratulating those who are involved in the energy efficiency challenge.

(S3O-1005) The lessons for Scotland that I identified on my visits to businesses and legislatures in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria and Vancouver over five days of the recess are as follows: first, Canadian businesses are receptive to the Government's message and will invest further in Scotland; secondly, Canadian businesses are receptive to doing more business with more Scottish companies in Canada, given the success of existing Scottish businesses and our national and business common values; thirdly, the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia are doing particularly well because they enjoy a high level of financial and fiscal autonomy, control their own resources and retain an increasingly fair share of the wealth created in their provinces; and fourthly, we saw the oil and gas royalty review in Alberta, based on a report called "Our Fair Share", in which the concept that"Alberta's natural resources belong to Albertans"was taken as given and tabled unchallenged.I drew the conclusions that, first, Scotland under the SNP Government is now on the right track, and secondly, that our aspirations to emulate and exceed the powers of Canadian provinces are right, urgent and guaranteed to reward the people of Scotland.

I mention his name in the debate because he was diabetic and was an international player for England. He told me before the reception that he had been all ready to go to Mexico with England for the World Cup, when he suddenly had a phone call from the England team doctor, who told him that he was not going to Mexico because he was diabetic.

Meeting of the Parliament 22 December 2010

I urge the cabinet secretary to give assurances in his closing speech that the prosecution guidelines will be strengthened.16:07 Hugh Henry’s bill rightly raises the problem of the abuse and injury by members of the public that can be suffered by staff in shops, public services, receptions of all kinds, complaints departments and other public-facing jobs.

At best, that is bad politics, but it is dangerously complacent in the face of the detailed and wide-ranging evidence that was taken by the committee. As Peter Peacock said, it is particularly disappointing—and perhaps surprising—that the Government has not been more receptive to the committee's recommendation on enhanced pressured area status, which would p...

Scottish Enterprise, VisitScotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise are doing further scoping work, and I know that ministers will be receptive to proposals once that work has been done.
