I wish to record that the Liberal Democrat party is not attracted to amendment 1 or 37 and will support neither. The public interest is not best protected by the proposals. We believe that the Crown works for the Crown, and it is not clear to us what supervisory or protective role it would play on behalf of the public interest. In the politest of manners, Professor Rennie told the Justice and Home Affairs Committee that the amendment is an entirely bogus argument that has no legal foundation. We believe that the public interest can best be served in the way that Jim Wallace has talked about: through legislation, local authorities and so on.
