If we can get the strategy approved, the next port of call will be to ensure that it is followed by the Parliament and used as an example of best practice in Scotland. I welcome the consultation and acknowledge the fact that there has been wide communication to get to this point.
We need a long-term, clear strategy so that parents know that if rationalisation has to take place it will happen on a fair and open basis—on the basis of what is best for children, rather than simply to cut budgets.
It is a carefully thought out and long-standing programme that meets our EU obligations as well as protecting public health. That is in the best interests of the health of the people of Scotland and of our fishing industry.
Some of the people whom we interviewed felt that it would be good if cross-party groups could be helped to adopt best practice and that there should be some thought about how they could best relate to outside groups, organisations and members of the public.
