The inquiry is important and timely and its findings and recommendations—which were agreed by all members of the committee—deserve to be listened to and acted on.The committee was right to initiate the inquiry in March 2001, given the disquiet that was being expressed about SHEFC's proposals.

There have been so many failed targets on child poverty—set by both Governments—that it is hard to keep count of them all. On 26 March 1999, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, announced a £0.5 billion strategy to reduce the number of children living in poverty by 60,000 in Scotland.
