I have been struck most by the fact that what matters fundamentally to people in rural Scotland does not really differ to what matters to people who live in urban areas. We all want a good environment to live in; security in our homes; the opportunity to bring up our families safely; a good education for our children...
As Mr Hamilton pointed out, it highlights the vagaries of trying to live in those communities. It is suggested that we pass this on to our colleagues in the appropriate committee, and ask the Executive for a response.
Can you clarify whether there are any other measures that the Ministry of Defence would take outwith the 2km zone around Faslane? I live not that far from Faslane and am aware that the MOD regularly monitored the background radiation levels on Bute and similar areas.
Even if just the committee regards the review group's decision as inadequate, could we still call for a public inquiry? The petition remains live until we decide that it is complete.
However, I am advised that that would raise questions about members' private lives. God forbid. We would wish members to act with integrity in their private and public lives, so that change to the text need not cause concern.
