The main inconsistency in Mr McLetchie's approach and in the Conservatives' policy is that they want hospitals to be independent, yet they have the cheek to say that the core principles of the NHS would be safe under the Tories, and that the service would be free at the point of use and available to all, while hospitals would also be accountable. Mr McLetchie stressed accountability; Miss Goldie stressed accountability; other Conservative members stressed accountability.
