Supported by: Bob Doris*, Colin Beattie*, Bill Kidd*, Emma Harper*, Ruth Maguire*, David Torrance*, Annabelle Ewing*, Kevin Stewart*, Stephanie Callaghan*, Stuart McMillan*, Karen Adam*, Miles Briggs* *S6M-11312 Brian Whittle: Celebrating the Career of Kilmarnock Boxing Legend, Tom Brown—That the Parliament congratulates Tom Brown on his retirement from boxing after nearly 74 years; understands that Tom began boxing at 12 years old while attending Glencairn Primary School in Kilmarnock, and sharpened his boxing skills in the Armed Forces; further understands that he won the British Championships representing the Air Training Corps in Kilmarnock in 1955, and the British inter-service boxing title that same year; notes that Tom joined the National Service, where he served in the Royal Scots Regiment from 1958 to 1960 and boxed for the battalion, winning the British Army Over the Rhine Championship and also serving time in Berlin as a physical training instructor; understands that Tom continued the development of his boxing career while working as a brass moulder until 1992, by passing all three stages of exams set up by the Scottish Amateur Boxing Association; recognises what it sees as the astounding achievement of holding the position of national boxing coach from 1989 until 2000, when the national association was disbanded; further recognises that Tom was named Scottish Coach of the Year in 1991; celebrates Tom’s long-held approach to coaching that seeks to foster social development as well as training within the sport, which, it believes, has positively impacted his community through the numerous athletes that he has trained; reflects warmly on Tom’s career, during which he has visited over 70 countries and numerous prestigious sporting events, such as the Olympic Games in Barcelona, and the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in 1990, Victoria in 1994 and Kuala Lumpur in 1998, and held posts as a club coach, Scottish national coach, Team GB coach, and, lately, as an official timekeeper; commends Tom on his long and impactful career, and wishes him well in his retirement.
