In the light of the fact that the Scottish Executive has presided over the destruction of the Scottish book retailing industry to the extent that there is not one substantial Scottish-owned book retailer left, and bearing in mind the importance of books to the intellectual life of a nation, what will the Executive do to redress the situation other than to produce yet more expensive reports, which have been condemned as meaningless by publishers such as Canongate in Holyrood magazine?

I welcome that response and paragraph 7.3.3 of the national waste strategy, but the strategy contains nothing that says whether the Executive agrees that the principle of zero waste—of minimising waste rather than dealing with it once it has been generated—should produce the change in products and packaging that will eliminate waste production.

The Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Bill, as Fiona McLeod knows, is currently at stage 1 in the Transport and the Environment Committee and I understand that the committee will produce a report soon. When it does, I will consider closely its recommendations on the matter.
