I would welcome an indication from the minister that we will make more than a nodding acquaintance with 20mph limits and streets that are safe for everyone to use.
This means that sometimes controversial policies, such as the roll out of a city-wide 20mph limit, have been pursued in the face of sometimes vocal opposition.
Reducing the difference between the speed limits for cars and HGVs from 20mph to 10mph has meant that there has been a palpable drop in driver frustration.

I welcome the Scottish Government’s proposal to extend the 20mph limit.It is essential that walkers and cyclists can make a complete journey in an environment in which they are unhindered by physical barriers and respected by other road users.
We could build a railway line with a 100mph speed limit on it, but if we put too many trains on it, they will be able to run at only 20mph. The same is true of broadband—it is the throughput on lines that matters.

Support has been provided since 2003 for 20mph schemes around schools, related safety projects and home zones (20mph); a child pedestrian training pilot in West Dunbartonshire (CPTP), and funding for new school travel co-ordinator posts (STC).
We know that 20mph zones are critical. In the 20mph areas in the 75 pilot schemes that we have considered for the research there are fewer accidents and—because of the 20mph tag—drivers are more aware.
