These regulations mark a very welcome return to free international trade in almost everything that we produce. There are, however, three specific exceptions that relate to wild game in the Scottish Borders and the Stranraer and Dumfries areas of Dumfries and Galloway.

In particular, in paragraph 4, which deals with consultation, the Executive note states that the consequence of the waiver of the headage limit of 90 animals per age bracket"may lead to an increase in animals claimed and thus increase the likelihood of a breach of the regional ceiling".That is coupled with the introduction of a derogation to"exempt the small producer (who claims 30 animals per year or less)".I would appreciate further information from the Executive about how the regulations will impact on farmers in general.

We acknowledge the importance of exports to the Scottish livestock industry, especially to sheep producers in more remote areas. The Minister for Environment and Rural Development will be discussing with the other UK agriculture ministers the best way to put a case to the European Union that will result in exports recommencing.
