Made provision to reduce the default speed limit on restricted roads, generally residential streets and minor roads in urban areas, from 30mph to 20mph. This Bill fell at Stage 1 on 13 June 2019.

Does Alex Johnstone accept that, on some of the west coast roads, such a speed limit would make it virtually impossible to overtake the goods vehicles, which are forced to slow down to 20mph on bends and hills? Indeed. It is horses for courses, but the experiment on the A9 will give us vital information.

If we drop the speed limit from 60 to 57mph, somebody will not suddenly say, “Oh, I’d better drive at 50,” when they have been driving at 70mph. They will continue to drive 20mph faster than the speed limit rather than 10mph faster.

Sorry, is the limit in the community bit 20mph or 30mph? I can understand why, when the environmental statement work was carried out, it was felt that the route alignment through Dundas estate would have had a major environmental impact on the area.

I am also thinking of stand-alone signage on the road that comes on when a bus or school vehicle stops, like the signage that currently applies to 20mph limits on approaches to schools.
