I fully support Elaine Thomson's motion, the first part of which states:"That the Parliament congratulates the United Nations on its co-ordination of the International Year of Mountains".I was happy to sign the motion to show my support, but I am a little perplexed about why Elaine Thomson has not so far supported the motion on that very subject—the international year of mountains—that I lodged a few weeks ago, which now has the support of 18 MSPs...

I believe that he has written to many MSPs seeking their help and support. I wrote to Mr Galbraith on the issue that we are discussing and have been kept informed of the on-going debate by Mike Rowell.The original response from the Executive was clear: local authorities had control of the issue and the Executive was taking a hands-off approach.

What Cathy Jamieson is concerned about is the whole issue of somebody challenging the system whereby opticians are able to make any recommendation without there being any recourse for the individual other than through their MSP. That takes us back to our previous discussions about the ombudsman.

Unlike her and Gordon Jackson, I have not visited many prisons, but I have visited Barlinnie in my role as an MSP. I admire and applaud the staff and prisoners there for putting up with terrible conditions.
