*S5M-03947 Liam McArthur: Skara Brae Nominated as Heritage Site of the Year That the — Parliament congratulates Skara Brae as the only Scottish visitor attraction in the running to be named Heritage Site of the Year in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards; understands that the bestselling author and travel writer, Bill Bryson, was tasked by the magazine to nominate his top five heritage sites from across the length and breadth of the country, representing the UK s historic ’ environment; further understands that the awards are now in in their sixth year and aim to celebrate the best of the British countryside and its people; notes that Skara Brae, sited in Orkney at the heart to Neolithic Britain, forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, is up against strong competition including Stonehenge, Durham Cathedral, the historic seaside town of Tenby and the artificial lake of Rutland Water; believes that Skara Brae, with 5,000 years of history, continues to captivate audiences and visitors from across the country and further afield with 68,000 visitors a year; credits the nomination of Skara Brae to the dedication of staff at the heritage centre who bring the site to life for every visitor; encourages members of the public to cast their vote online until 28 February 2017 and to choose a winner, and wishes Skara Brae all the best for the online ceremony in March.
