In response to animal welfare and conservation concerns about the extent of mountain hare culling taking place, a new licensing scheme for mountain hare was introduced in March 2021. The Animals and Wildlife (Penalties, Protections and Powers) (Scotland) Act 2020 amended Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to include mountain hares.
