We would like those other initiatives to go ahead as well.We should bear it in mind that MSPs are elected, but that does not mean that they do not consult.
In particular, I welcome back a face that will be familiar to many around the table—certainly to those of us who are getting older and wiser. Jean Turner has served as an MSP and is now working on behalf of the Scotland Patients Association.
As you know, I was a councillor before I became an MSP. People have to be accountable at all levels and I frequently tell my constituents that I cannot tell the council what to do and that I do not intend to do so.
I hope that the policy memorandum will give you a good feel for the views that have been expressed by the public, MSPs and business organisations. Where is the assumption expressed that a manifesto commitment need not be consulted on?
However, committee members will consult tablets to access their papers for the meeting. We are joined by Elaine Murray MSP, Jackie Baillie MSP and Joan McAlpine MSP for our consideration of subordinate legislation, and I welcome them to the meeting.
I do not need to repeat that, as several MSPs have mentioned it. The Scottish Government frequently states that Scotland has a different approach to immigration, but that is not really backed up by any evidence.
