We have a fairly good handle on the scale of the problem.I agree, however, that we need to do more to tackle the problem outwith hospital. Of course, the best way to do that is to ensure that older people have the necessary income to be able to afford to buy the food that they need to sustain themselves.

Although I think that there is a role for patient opinion in all this, the hospital’s primary responsibility is to heal the patient and have them leave hospital at the earliest possible time and in the best possible health. I think that a slightly homoeopathic element is being brought into the discussion, rather than a clinical one.
