Fairly recently, I gave a briefing on the issue to Lanarkshire MSPs, who include the convener. I suspect that we were invited to give evidence because of that briefing.
Mr Welsh is joined by his constituency MSP, Ken Macintosh. I will give Ken Macintosh an opportunity to make a contribution at some point after we have heard from Mr Welsh.
The Law Society of Scotland provided a briefing to MSPs last week in which it expressed its reservations, stating that “the reduced licence period of 6 months may well be wholly inadequate to assist reintegration into the community and reduce risk of reoffending.”
It may be helpful to the committee to know that I wrote to the cabinet secretary on Thursday when I found out the details of the issue. Furthermore, other MSPs have asked me about it on behalf of constituents.
Graeme Dey came out to our kennels and I feel that if MSPs went out into their communities to see exactly what was going on in all the rescues throughout Scotland, they would get a proper feel for the situation regarding the Staffordshire bull terriers.
