Exceptional circumstances might be pled quite often but I do not think that such pleading is successful very often. You are speaking to a rural MSP. I do not think it is an issue of whether we are up for it; we are looking at the difficulties for the public.

I was going to ask a question about restoration, but given the clarification that the minister has just provided, I will not do so. Obviously as a South Scotland MSP—just to be parochial again—I have had concerns raised with me not only in relation to Canonbie but on the much broader issue of the lack of restoration bonds for opencast mining.

Therefore, further to Professor Stahel’s earlier reference to people caring for special things, I want to point out that my handbag was given to me by my school when I left after 10 years to become an MSP. When the handles of the handbag broke, I got my partner to replace them with plumber’s tubes.

I agree with not only Alison Gillies but Anne Swartz and May Barker that this is not just about money but about other kinds of support. As a constituency MSP, I constantly get families like Anne’s and May’s coming to me, and I know that for kinship carers the benefits system is a financial minefield.
