Supported by: Jeremy Balfour*, Murdo Fraser*, Miles Briggs*, Jackie Baillie*, Rachael Hamilton*, Bill Kidd*, Mark McDonald* R, Bob Doris*, Monica Lennon*, Sarah Boyack*, John Mason*, Liam McArthur*, Alexander Burnett*, Beatrice Wishart*, Neil Findlay*, Stuart McMillan*, David Torrance* *S5M-24297 Clare Adamson: Passing of the Scottish Football Icon, Ian St John—That the Parliament marks with sadness the passing of the Motherwell legend and Scottish football icon, Ian St John; notes that Mr St John, who was born in Motherwell, began his illustrious career with local youth sides and works teams before signing for his boyhood heroes, Motherwell FC; understands that Mr St John, a prolific forward, played an integral role in a Motherwell side under the guidance of Bobby Ancell, scoring 80 goals in 113 league games, as well as scoring one of the fastest hat-tricks in Scottish football history, and making his name as part of a group of players known as the "Ancell Babes"; recognises that Mr St John was signed by Liverpool FC for a then club record fee and was elevated to superstardom as a key player in a Liverpool team that became one of Europe's top sides under its manager, Bill Shankly, initially securing promotion to England's top tier before going on to win two league titles and one FA Cup, with Mr St John scoring the winner in the 1965 FA Cup final; further recognises that he was capped for the Scottish national team 21 times and scored nine goals, including two in a World Cup qualifying playoff against a fearsome Czechoslovakia team; acknowledges that, following his retirement from playing, Mr St John went on to manage his former club, Motherwell, before making the successful transition to football punditry, and is credited with revolutionising football broadcasting through the fan-favourite television programme, Saint & Greavsie, alongside his fellow former footballer, Jimmy Greaves; further acknowledges that Mr St John was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame in 2008; commends Mr St John’s lasting legacy in Motherwell, his outstanding contribution to football, both on and off the pitch, and sends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.
