We sometimes assume that efficiencies can always be gained. As elected members—I include MSPs in this—we should always strive to ensure the maximum efficiency that we can secure, not just when cuts are imposed.
I am often asked what the responsibilities of an MSP are and I am able to list them, but this time I was asked, “What is your biggest responsibility as an MSP?”
I further note from the minutes that “Councillor James Dornan,”—now an MSP—“seconded by Councillor Hendry,”—both SNP councillors—“moved ... an amendment ... to extend the consultation period.”Only three members voted for the amendment, while 13 voted for the motion.

I served as a councillor on Fife Council from 1995 until I was elected as an MSP in 2011. Many of my fellow MSPs share the experience of having been elected first as a local councillor, then later as an MSP.
Not one person can say that what has happened at the yard over many years has been positive—not one person. I am the constituency MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, and as I grew up in Port Glasgow, the son of a coppersmith whose last job was working at the yard, my loyalty has always been to the yard.
