Key Issues for Session 6 - 2023 Update - Council tax freezes: a brief history and future costs

Assuming that councils were intending to increase council tax by similar amounts as 2023-24, the FAI estimates the freeze will cost £148 million in 2024-25. Of course, there is the possibility that councils were planning to raise council tax by even larger rates.

Key Issues for Session 6 - 2023 Update - The bumpy ride

On 7 June 2023, after the Minister for Social Care, Mental Wellbeing and Sport, Maree Todd, had written to, and been in front of, the Committee on 9 May, the Parliament agreed that Stage 1 consideration would be extended to 31 January 2024. In the Bill as introduced, legal accountability was to move to the Scottish Government, away from local authorities.
