To ask the Scottish Executive what its definition is of poverty in relation to income in Scotland today and, within the terms of its definition, how many families, pensioners and children live in poverty in Scotland today.
I do not accept that there is no one in Scotland who can carry out that role. I am not at all in favour of going down the road that has been advocated.
A bit more investigation is required into how the TWA, the Private Legislation Procedure (Scotland) Act 1936 and the semi-parliamentary models might operate in practice, so that we are more familiar with the issues about the option that we may eventually recommend.
In fact, the evidence to which the letter refers appears to suggest otherwise. In the north-east of Scotland—the Moray firth area—there are difficulties with stock, but the fishing is taking place on the west coast.
If we let the matter lie over the summer, we would not be giving due consideration to the seriousness and urgency of the issue. The chief medical officer for Scotland was at a meeting with the Medical Research Council that John McAllion and I attended.
Did you get a feel for the fact that it is by far the busiest court in Scotland? The strange thing about sheriff courts is that they do not necessarily reflect the population centres.
