If it becomes apparent that the SQA will not meet the set date, will the First Minister commit to intervene, using the powers that section 9(1) of the Education (Scotland) Act 1996 gives him? I am optimistic—and wish that other colleagues would be a bit more optimistic and have greater confidence in the work that is being done by the professionals.

Given that a University of York study states that the research evidence is of insufficient quality to allow confident statements to be made about potential harms, or about whether there might be any impact on social inequalities, will the minister ensure that up-to-date research is done and that accurate information is available before decisions are made in Scotland? Will she also recommend that members of her party are allowed a free vote on the issue?

Does the minister accept that, under this Government, stress-related illnesses are increasing among teachers in Scotland? Violence is one reason behind that trend, but there are others, such as increased paperwork and the amount of work teachers are expected to cram into each working day.
