Official Report Meeting date: 31 October 2013

European and External Relations Committee 31 October 2013

We all know the story about the fact that we have to pay for our whisky receptions in British embassies. That makes a nonsense of the political claims that are made. Most important is to focus on the jobs and the economic growth, and that is what we do.
Official Report Meeting date: 26 June 2013

Meeting of the Parliament 26 June 2013

Parliamentarians should have been left in no doubt at all about what the bill was designed to do, and there ought to have been a very clear signal from colleges and universities that they were receptive to the proposed changes. There ought also to have been a very clear message that the Scottish Government, the colleges and universities and the Scottish Furt...
Official Report Meeting date: 1 May 2013

Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee 01 May 2013

The committee might be interested to learn that the general reception that has been given to the Scottish MPA process has been highly favourable and contrasts sharply with how some of the processes that are happening elsewhere, particularly south of the border, have been received.

Meeting of the Parliament 27 March 2013

In recent years, some of the work of non-governmental organisations funded by the Scottish Government has been directed at tackling HIV/AIDS, as has some of the work of our CPA branch’s special envoy, Annie Lennox. As we will hear later at the reception that will follow the debate, the work of Annie Lennox and her aptly named sing campaign has been undertak...
Official Report Meeting date: 19 December 2012

Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee 19 December 2012

Of course, it is still early days, but where the system has been trialled it seems to have had a very good reception and things so far look positive.
Official Report Meeting date: 18 January 2012

Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee 18 January 2012

Although, historically, many of those organisations have tended to consolidate and bring together any small properties that have become available, they have become much more receptive to the notion of keeping small properties small with the specific aim of creating opportunities for new entrants.
Official Report Meeting date: 29 November 2011

Public Petitions Committee 29 November 2011

We recognise that there are pragmatic constraints—the economic climate is one—that preclude the fullest realisation of some of the recommendations, but that should not inhibit identification of steps that can be taken and the development of a road map for the way in which, the extent to which and the time in which all the recommendations can be realised. We propose—we hope that ministers will be receptive—to host a negotiated agreement to develop an action plan, which would identify the facts, and the wishes and desires of survivors; the range of institutional provisions; an analysis of the human rights involved, as we have outlined in the human rights framework; and who is responsible under a shared framework of common responsibilities and how each party will contribute to remedying the wrong that has been done.
Official Report Meeting date: 28 September 2011

Finance Committee 28 September 2011

We will make progress only by getting involved with the community, understanding people’s problems and, once we have got their trust and have a much more receptive audience, working with them to drive those agendas. As I said, it is horses for courses—we need different approaches for different circumstances.
Official Report Meeting date: 15 June 2011

Meeting of the Parliament 15 June 2011

Just a few short years ago, Michael McMahon hosted the Parliament’s first St Patrick’s day reception. Yet, despite this, in Scotland St Patrick’s Day remains an occasion that is fraught with tension and, in some cases, with violence because for some people my religion and heritage are the cause of suspicion and hate.I am proud to be a Celtic Football Club s...
Official Report Meeting date: 11 September 2008

Plenary, 11 Sep 2008

I heard that debated in Parliament in the previous session, when I was not a member—and it is a very important debate—but it seems to have led to a huge escalation in the numbers of prisoners on remand for petty offences, which is totally inappropriate. If prisons are to be efficient, they are faced with problems if they have high numbers of receptions. So the debate about the difference between the daily population and the receptions applies to fine defaulters—my colleagues in the SNP were trying to make that point.
