The ability to facilitate legal assistance outwith a police station would avoid the unnecessary interference with people’s private lives that is caused by taking them to a police station when it is not otherwise necessary.
In the absence of any contradictory evidence—for example, from closed-circuit television footage—such a criminal complaint must now proceed to a full investigation, because there is a prima facie sufficiency of evidence.
Again, there was not a lot of time for meaningful engagement with young people ahead of this committee meeting, but we work with thousands of young people every year and loads of them are happy to share their lived experiences, so we are able to hear from them directly.We also know from our development awards, the process for which is very similar, that the support makes a difference to young people’s lives.
