We continue to press the United Kingdom Government to waive visa requirements for Ukrainian nationals and to offer immediate refuge and sanctuary for those who may be displaced. Today’s Home Office announcement does not go far enough.
There is now a route for individuals who may be vulnerable. The petition calls for an exemption for small houses, but the Government has made it clear that it does not intend to introduce that and that it is not going to happen.
In the first instance, we will write to the teaching unions and get their parallel evidence in relation to the evidence that we already have and see where that takes us. It may well be that it leads to our agreeing to take further evidence on the petition at a forthcoming committee meeting.

Whilst the recruitment and employment of teachers are matters for local authorities as the employer, the member may wish to be aware that teachers are not employed on zero-hour contracts.
