You have already mentioned the fact that the implementation of ASBOs has required one police force alone to deploy 50 extra police officers. If you generate extra police manpower, will you be able to set priorities or will it be a case of firefighting?
If you are saying that all RSLs and local authorities should provide every service, there will have to be extra funding or rents or council tax will have to rise to pay for that.
That has to be addressed, possibly through the provision of extra money for money advisers, but there is a question over whether enough money is being provided for that.
When asked, people may say that they are happy to pay extra for those meters. However, they may not necessarily be happy to pay extra; it may be that, to avoid getting into debt, those meters are their only option.
Margaret Jamieson is absolutely right. People hear and read about extra money for health, but it is not always obvious to everyone where the money goes.
