Between 2011-12 and 2017-18, the population reduced by 9 per cent, driven by a reduction in the number of young people sent to prison, before it rose again in 2019-20. Between March and June 2020, we saw a temporary drop as a result of the pandemic, but the prison population has continued to rise since then.
