S6M-14812: Michelle Thomson: St Andrew’s Day 2024— That the Parliament celebrates St Andrew’s Day on 30 November 2024; recognises the global, national and local importance of this annual event; highlights what it sees as the opportunity that the people of Scotland have through St Andrew’s Day to celebrate their national identity, cultural diversity and place as one of the oldest nations in the international community; notes with thanks the efforts of the former MSP, Dennis Canavan, who it understands worked hard to gain cross-party agreement to make St Andrew’s Day a national holiday in Scotland; acknowledges what it sees as the economic benefits that global recognition brings to Scotland through the culture, business, education, tourism and retail sectors, including through the global brand created by Scotland in the use of the Saltire as the national flag and identifier of Scottish produce and marketing; understands that St Andrew is an internationally recognisable figure within faith communities and that, while St Andrew has been a patron of Scotland since the 14th century, he is also a patron of many other countries, bringing together different nationalities, faiths and cultures; acknowledges the events hosted by those countries that identify St Andrew as their patron, and the use of the Saltire and links with Scotland that these events promote globally; commends all those in Scotland who celebrate St Andrew’s Day and recognise the importance of the national day, and looks forward to future events being held across the world to keep connections with Scotland subsisting.

Dear Convenor of the Constitution, Europe, External Affairs and Culture Committee, The Scottish SPCA is gravely concerned about the impact that the Retained (EU) (Revocation and Reform) Bill may have on animal welfare. From speaking to our partners and contacts from across the UK, we believe there are 44 laws under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 relating to animal welfare and, should they disappear, this could have a catastrophic impact on Scotland’s animals.
