Yes—they have some disposable income at the end of the month, but they are not the millionaires that we hear about all the time from those who wish to make political capital out of people’s fears.The really depressing thing about this is that even if we went down the route that the Labour Party and its colleagues are suggesting, it would not save us any money. From a 2012 Fabian Society report, we hear about a 1998 report by Walter Korpi and Joachim Palme about the paradox of redistribution that states: “The more we target benefits at the poor only ... the less likely we are to reduce poverty and inequality”The report goes on to say that we are also less likely to save money.
