I did not feel that it was an adequate response whatsoever. It may not be possible to summarise matters, as the SSC suggests, but I think that it could have gone a little further in giving some examples that it may be aware of from its own experience in order to illuminate the issue further for the committee.
Paragraph 4.3 continues: “members may thus serve a total of two consecutive terms” and a member’s “total period of appointment may not exceed 8 years.”
I think that an independent body is needed. There may be other options that can be considered in relation to where that sits, but that function is vital.
I always think that we can work closely in that regard. The committee may be aware that Aberdeen City Council actually has a credit rating—we were the first local authority in Scotland to apply for that.
If those proposals had been the basis of Theresa May’s plan, I doubt that those of us in the Green Party and others who were inclined towards stopping Brexit completely would have had much of a chance.
