We completely understand why the disability assistance payments have been delayed, but that group of people has been cut adrift in much of the Covid response.
I am also grateful to the Army for some logistical support that it is giving us now around the vaccination programme. However, the programme involves people at all levels of Government, people in the NHS and many in our country’s community health services.
That is already a massive gap, which we try to fill in schools by putting in place many programmes to do that. In order for those programmes to work, we have to upskill the teachers, of course.
How vital were their efforts to help communities to deliver essential services, to drive ambulances and other blue-light vehicles, to assist with the vaccination and testing programmes and, of course, to carry out their usual duties?

I also point out to Beatrice Wishart the commitment in our 100 days document to increase teacher numbers by 1,000 and classroom assistant numbers by 500 as part of our commitment to provide 3,500 additional teachers and classroom assistants over the parliamentary term.
The savings will include the removal of “unviable” courses, cutting the higher education personal academic tutor role and removing programmes in which school students can attend part-time learning.
