Do we honestly believe that in an independent Scotland we could not afford to pay for 3,500 disabled people to live full and independent lives? I do not think that that is what we believe.
However, I hope that, through working with stakeholders and people with lived experience, and through listening to the debt advice community, we can get to a product that really drives improvement in people’s lives.
Indeed, we should bear in mind that a lot of our members in CalMac live on those islands. To say, therefore, that we have some kind of stranglehold and that we live in the past is inherently untrue.
We need to think about how what happens at the central level connects with lived experience and the reality that people face at various stages in their lives.
