As Irene Oldfather mentioned, history books remind us of the Schuman plan, which was born not only because of world war two, but because of world war one. I recall a visit that I made last summer to pay my respects at the war graves at Ypres and at the Menin gate, which is perhaps the most visited memorial to the great war on the western front.
