We know that, once a spending review outcome has been declared, there is limited flexibility during the remainder of the spending review period, although we might be fortunate and get a bit of extra funding. We were pleased that the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning did, indeed, quickly find a small amount of extra funding for the universities, but that was not our primary interest, which was to have a serious dialogue with Government about the contribution that universities could make and the resources required to enable them to do that.
