Supported by: Kenneth Gibson*, Emma Harper*, Bill Kidd*, Kevin Stewart*, Evelyn Tweed*, Brian Whittle*, Clare Haughey*, Rona Mackay*, George Adam*, Colin Beattie*, Miles Briggs*, Foysol Choudhury*, Ben Macpherson* *S6M-13684 Alexander Stewart: Lord-Lieutenant Alan Simpson CVO OBE—That the Parliament congratulates Stirling and Falkirk Lord-Lieutenant, Alan Simpson OBE, on being appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) by His Majesty King Charles III; acknowledges that the CVO is awarded in recognition of distinguished service to the monarch and members of the Royal Family, both in the UK and across the Commonwealth; considers that Edinburgh-born Alan Simpson spent most of his working life as a civil engineer with Fairhurst, based in Glasgow, and that he was responsible for the design of a wide range of civil engineering projects, including the strengthening of the Forth Road Bridge, the completion of the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow, parts of the M74, wind farms, power station improvements, water treatment works and sewage treatment works, before retiring from that role in 2009; notes that he was chairman of the Court of the University of Stirling from 2007 to 2015 and was Chair of the Committee of Scottish Chairs of Higher Education Institutions; believes that he was also a member of the Von Prondzynski review panel, set up by the Scottish Government to report on higher education governance; understands that Alan’s other interests include music, and that he was chairman of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland from 1998 to 2011; acknowledges that he is also a past chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland, having previously served on the Council of ICE, then was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2023 and is a member of The King’s Bodyguard for Scotland, the Royal Company of Archers; notes that Alan is the current chair of the Macrobert Arts Centre and of the Lake of Menteith Fisheries Limited; recognises that he was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to education, and was appointed as Lord-Lieutenant for Stirling and Falkirk in 2017, and was then awarded the CVO in June 2024, and commends Alan for his sterling work for business and education, as well as for civilian and military communities right across the region, in addition to what it sees as his outstanding loyalty and service to the Crown.
