The University of Edinburgh's school of physical education has a one-year postgraduate course ready and waiting to go, which would allow the recruitment of more gym teachers from primary schools, but it lacks the funds to put it into effect. I suggest that that additional measure might be welcome.

(S2O-02136) On 13 April 2004, I announced that the Scottish Executive has secured a voluntary agreement with all 32 local authorities—subject to some local variations for gun clubs—to grant at least 80 per cent discretionary rates relief to sports clubs that are registered as community amateur sports clubs with the Inland Revenue. The cost of such relief will be funded centrally. Will the Scottish Executive take measures to make every genuine sports club in Scotland aware of the advantages of registering as a community amateur sports club with the Inland Revenue and of applying to their local council for rates relief?

I am not aware of any recent application from that charity for grant funding. I thank the minister for that answer, but I am sure that he will remember the fine words that the First Minister and others expressed in the chamber about the need to support our troops during the recent conflict in Iraq.
