To avoid the democratic uncertainty and lack of accountability that occurred in England’s local elections between 2020-2021, there has to be an expiry date to any postponement. This was rightly recognised in the Scottish General Election (Coronavirus) Act 2021, and the Committee should satisfy itself that the Bill provides for such an expiry date of any postponement beyond which an election must be conducted.
