Disability charities including Inclusion Scotland have stated: “Accessibility standards that address barriers in built and online environments may improve access and inclusion.”
That might be done through the telephone system but, equally, people can look at the online resources and the self-help guides that I referenced earlier.
It is disappointing that the Scottish Government did not take a more direct approach to consulting communities on a policy that will directly impact their livelihoods and viability. It is easy to see that an online consultation with online workshops was a poor choice as a means of engagement.

There is also the work that the COP26 Coalition did during the Glasgow summit. Over two years, we ran several online people’s summits, and ahead of and during COP26 we ran a hybrid in-person and online people’s summit.
However, if doing that is unavoidable for security reasons, it may be possible for a unified network to be formed that would allow members of the public and public sector staff to get online at all public buildings using a single sign-on.
