It is important to acknowledge the many organisations in Scotland that care about and contribute to Scotland's partnership with Malawi.While in Malawi, I visited Bwalia Hospital and the University College of Nursing and College of Medicine. I was very pleased to see the work that is being done between Scotland and Malawi.

It is a big challenge for universities to make that difference.Recently, I spoke to the University of Glasgow about what it is doing to widen participation in subjects such as medicine and veterinary studies, which have been particularly difficult in the past for those from more deprived areas to access.

We have been left in a situation in which we have variable fees for medicine degrees, which we have always firmly disagreed with.It would be naive for me to say that there will not be an impact, but I suggest that there should not be a knee-jerk reaction until we know what the outcome of that difference in fees is.
