For example, the first phase of our patient safety programme has helped to deliver a 17 per cent reduction in hospital mortality, supporting the staff in our hospitals to save more lives. What I am most proud of is that the safety programme has helped to drive a 21 per cent reduction in 30-day mortality for sepsis—blood poisoning—again saving lives, especially young lives, across Scotland.
My understanding is that the Scottish Local Government Partnership and my authority pay the Scottish living wage or more to our staff. However, it is my understanding that in childcare—unlike in social care—the living wage is not a requirement, although many nursery care workers in the independent sector are paid the living wage.
To ask the Scottish Government for what reason, despite an increase in the number of businesses pledging to pay the real Living Wage, the percentage of people actually being paid the real Living Wage or more has been decreasing for three consecutive years.

To ask the Scottish Government what action it is taking to encourage businesses to implement the real Living Wage, in light of reports that Scotland's level of real Living Wage employers is, proportionately, five times that of the UK as a whole.
