To echo what Jim Kennedy said, such boards are in a position to invest in continuing professional development. It is important that although medical and dental additional costs of teaching—ACT—funding is in place for medical and dental staff development, there is no equivalent funding for nurses or allied health professionals, most of whom pay for their own continuing professional development.

That is no accident, but part of the Executive's strategy for funding research. I hope that that funding can be backed up by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council looking to fund more marine energy research in our universities, because, by capitalising on the development of such technology in Scotland, we can be Europe's leaders in the industry.I was pleased to see that the forum for renewable energy development in Scotland has set up a marine energy sub-group, and that meetings are to take place with people who are developing the marine energy sector in Portugal, to which Murdo Fraser and others have referred.

The Executive has accepted the report’s recommendations in full and is currently seeking comments from interested parties on both the report and its response.The National Workforce Committee is providing leadership on the workforce development agenda and has made it possible for the first time to take a comprehensive overview of the health workforce.

There seem to be more yesses than nos among the responses, but the yesses highlight the issue of funding. I am disappointed that 17 local authorities did not reply to us but, on the whole, the 15 that did so are positive about the proposal, if the necessary funding is made available.
