Child Poverty in Scotland since the 1960s - 1990s - The highest rate of child poverty in the EU

There were several measures taken to combat child poverty, although the details are largely beyond the scope of this briefing: higher rates of benefits including an increase in Child Benefit in 1998 introduction of Children's Tax Credit in 2001 extended Disability Living Allowance to three and four year old children the Sure Start programme introduced in 1998 Education Maintenance Allowance introduced in 1999 introduction of a National Minimum Wage in 1998, increased financial support for childcare and for undertaking training courses to assist parents in finding paid work.

Salmon farming Dr Martin Jaffa 28 November

The results of sampling wild salmon for sea lice in 2024, part of an ongoing twenty year plus programme, shows that even though there was no salmon farming in the researched area, sea lice counts on wild fish increased to levels above that when the salmon farm as present and in full production.
