Children's Hearings System - Taking Stock of Recent Reforms - About the Hearing System
A sheriff court is generally only involved if grounds of referral are in dispute or not understood, a child protection or child assessment order is required or there is an appeal against a decision of a hearing. The aim is to balance the ‘lay’ character of the system with the guarantees of individual rights afforded by a court system.
