I think that the dean of the faculty said the same thing in his article in "Holyrood" magazine. There is no magic about the number.I do not know whether Parliament realises this, but ours is the only jurisdiction in the world that requires its citizens to remain in jail for such a short time awaiting trial.

I hope that the Minister for Justice read the letter from Douglas Keil, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, that was printed in the most recent edition of Holyrood Magazine. He put the situation succinctly when he said:"If any particular duty requires police powers then we should all accept that a police officer is required to do it.

I cannot put my finger on the point at the moment, but I know that one of Margaret Mitchell's subsequent amendments would delete the power of the court to excuse irregularities. However, amendment 115 appears, de facto, to excuse procedural irregularities in relation to what she proposes.
