*S5M-11948 Kenneth Gibson: RBS Presses Ahead with Closures as Profits Soar That the — Parliament condemns the decision taken by RBS to close 52 branches across Scotland, including the three North Ayrshire branches in Kilbirnie, Kilwinning, and Saltcoats; understands that, pending review, a further 10 remote branches are also earmarked for closure, despite the news that RBS recorded a pre-tax profit of £1.2 billion for the first quarter of 2018, with its bottom- line profit of £792 million exceeding its profits for the whole of 2017; believes that, despite RBS’ assertion that people are migrating to digital services and online banking, many customers will feel the detrimental impact of these closures through the loss of jobs, the damage to their area's businesses and the lack of person-to-person banking facilities; understands that such concerns have been articulated by organisations such as the Federation of Small Businesses; believes that older people, people in poor health or on low incomes will be disproportionately affected by the closures as they may be incapable of travelling further distances to visit an RBS branch and because the mobile banking services that are being offered as an alternative in rural communities are being reduced and, it understands, are not fully accessible to people with limited mobility or who are wheelchair users; recognises that the UK taxpayer holds a 72.9% stake in RBS and that banking regulation is a reserved matter, and therefore urges the UK Government to intervene and prevent what it sees as needless closures and to protect banking services in North Ayrshire, across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
