I know that there are thousands of directives, and I am not asking that we scrutinise every one of them, but when dealing with legislation that has an impact on many people's lives, we should compare statutory instruments with the relevant directives.I will provide the committee with an example, although I am not asking the committee to look into it.

This is a traditional time of year for addressing issues around homelessness, not just for children and families who face the prospect of spending Christmas or new year in bed-and-breakfast or temporary accommodation, but for many other people across Scotland who have to live with temporary homelessness or the threat of it.

The fact that there have been 10 deaths in six or seven years must be of great concern to us all. The reasons for them may be many and varied. We will perhaps wish to see the sheriff's views in the fatal accident inquiries that require to be held on the most recent cases.

I cannot make this any clearer—I say factually and honestly: we were not involved in the private visit. Why not? I am responsible for many things, but I am not responsible for things that are organised completely outwith the Executive and outwith the Parliament and that are concerned with a personal visit.

If we decided not to note the petition but to deal with it, and the following week a petition on planning was submitted—which would probably be more legitimate—would we examine that? We have many things to do and the Executive is reviewing the matter, so we should not spend time examining individual suggestions such as this.

I recognise that there are good arguments about the politicisation of individuals who serve in a court. However, many very experienced councillors currently give a lot of time and effort to the work of district courts and their absence could cause problems.

The only solution is the nuclear option—of the committee refusing point blank to deal with any matter that is referred to it. I have tried to highlight, in many quarters, that the committee is getting close to using the nuclear option, although I hope that I will not have to detonate very soon.
