I am minded to support what Margaret Jamieson suggests, but only if the petitioners are given full and up-to-date information. If the petitioners remain dissatisfied, they could lodge another petition in the next Parliament.
Although we can invite individuals and organisations to come along to the committee, they might not be available on the dates that are suggested. We will have to try to match that up.
The point has been well made—perhaps we can revisit the matter informally at a later date. We will try to consider the issue, but my team would kill me if I overcommitted them.
That is possible—the Executive may even take that suggestion on board. The dates shown on school calendars will be also be different from year to year.
It is incumbent on us to reduce the backlog of work for our successor committee, if we possibly can. I agree with the cut-off date that has been chosen; in fact, I might have suggested an earlier date with a view to reducing the backlog further.
They have said to me previously that any day might be as easy or as difficult as any other. In any event, the date that we chose was 2 December. I was at Westminster last week.
