As an economist, I am aware that this is clearly a time of severe budget constraints, and I do not envy Mr Swinney’s job—or yours—of putting together a budget within those constraints that also tackles the major economic issues. I am not sure that you can extrapolate from past figures the likely demand for services. In any case, with recession, higher unemployment and economic difficulty there will be exacerbated social problems, which will be reflected by demands on the justice system.
